Rainy Day

Year of release: 2019
Platform: Web
Tools: HTML5, Javascript

Itch.io
Newgrounds
Armor Games
Cool Math Games

An adventure platformer made of ASCII characters, where the player has to avoid the rain by using its umbrella, jumping and gliding. Eight levels with each their own mechanics, with secrets to find and several endings.

I started working on this game in 2018, beginning with a ten minutes tech demo published on Itch. I wanted to prove to myself that it was possible to make a game with Javascript’s basic features and a grid of text. No external libraries was used to make this game. It was composed of a grid of texts layed on top of each other to make the background and foreground. The demo received positive reviews so I made a full version that was released in 2019.

In 2020, with more experience in Javascript, I made a remake of the first game with improved graphics and controls, save features and two new levels. The game was now using a canvas to draw the game, so it would not look different from a web browser to another.

Rainy Day was published on Itch, Newgrounds, Armor Games and Cool Math Games. It was played more than 40.000 times and praised for its gameplay and level design, but also its difficulty, being compared to VVVVVV and I Wanna Be The Guy.
